FBI Agent

Job Description

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the investigative arm of the U.S. Dept. of Justice. The FBI investigates cases as assigned to it and provides services like fingerprint identification, lab examinations, and other forensic science jobs to other agencies (both local, State, and Federal).  As an FBI agent, you get the opportunity to participate in investigations into violent crimes, major offenders, financial crimes, counterterrorism, civil rights violations, applicant matters, organized crime, organized drugs, and many more extremely important cases.

The FBI employs nearly 33,000 people and over 13,000 special agents.  This may seem like a lot, but it is relatively difficult to get into the FBI and it really requires a special set of talents.  Working for the FBI can be both mentally and physically challenging so it will test your stamina in pretty much every area.  It is a great challenge that will allow you to experience some of the inner-workings of our government on a regular basis.  You get to work with World class equipment and people as together you fight crime and protect the citizens of the United States.

Requirements

As you might expect, there are a lot of requirements you must meet before you can join an elite organization like the FBI.  Here are the main requirements:

  • You must be a U.S. citizen
  • You must be between the ages of 23 and 37 years
  • You must have corrected vision of 20/20 in one eye and no worse than 20/40 in the other eye
  • You must have at least a bachelor’s degree in law, accounting, science, or language program
  • You must make it through several strict background checks including multiple interviews with you and the references that you use.
  • You must go through an intense 4-month training period at the FBI Academy and pass.
  • You will have a two-year probationary assignment after which you will become an FBI Agent.

Job Outlook

The job outlook for FBI Agents remains stable.  As we have increasing concerns regarding counterterrorism and other types of organized crime, we expect that the FBI will grow in the coming years.  We do expect to continue to be an elite organization so growth won’t be as fast as in other criminal justice careers.
