One of the biggest challenges facing college criminal justice students is figuring out how to pay for college. We know that you have a ton of questions and we will do our best to provide you with some good resources that you can go to in order to come up with your own plan for paying for a criminal justice degree. There are essentially three basic ways to pay for college:
- Criminal Justice Grants – These are an excellent way to pay for your online college degree as grants do not need to be paid back. Essentially the challenge is finding grants to apply for and then waiting for the grant to be approved.
- Criminal Justice Scholarships – Scholarships, like grants do not need to be repaid. Unlike grants, scholarships are rewarded based upon some specific merit (academic excellence, community service, or some other specialized skill or qualification). The challenge with scholarships is again locating and applying for them.
- Criminal Justice Loans – The final option and one that should always enable you to get that college degree you need to advance your career. You should explore all Federal loans first as they generally offer the lowest interest rates (check with FAFSA – link below). After that, there are several online sources for student loans. Like any loan, please make sure you read the loan terms very carefully.
One of the first things that you should consider doing is exploring what our federal government has to offer in the form of grants, scholarships, and loans. You can do so by visiting their website at: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. This is a great resource that will explain in detail everything that is available to you.
Another important resource for funding college is actually going to be talking to the financial aid counselors at the online college you choose to attend. They are invaluable and also have a vested interest in making sure that you find a way to pay for college. It’s very smart to put them to work for you and have them help you hunt down scholarships, grants, or loans after the first two options have been exhausted.
In case you can’t find everything you need at those two places, here are some other sites online that you may want to check out (we are not affiliated with any of these sites nor do we vouch for any services they may provide):
Scholarship Experts – This is a private company that is well known for providing thousands of scholarship options to prospective students. Many other scholarship search sites utilize their database so this is a good place to start.
ScholarshipMonkey – This site has over 3.5 million scholarships to offer according to its own press. That’s impressive and makes them worth a look.
CareerInfoNet - This site is sponsored by the U.S. government and has over 5,000 scholarships to offer. We really prefer sites that the government is involved with so this is one that we recommend.
AdventuresinEducation – This is an interesting site because you can use keywords to search their database. You may like this if you are looking for very targeted types of scholarships.
BrokeScholar – Well, this is a great name and all too often is absolutely true. They have over 650,000 scholarships to offer you.
College Answer – This site is sponsored by Sallie Mae (therefore U.S. government agency). We like that association and think this is a site for you to visit.
CollegeFunds – This site helps you locate scholarships and says they will hunt them down for you which is a nice service.
College Connection Scholarships – They provide personalized recommendation letters for you and offer a free scholarship search utility.
Financial Aid Officer – As we discuss many times it’s always good to consult a financial aid officer, this site included.
FastAid – This is a private sector database of scholarships that says it is the original website for financial aid searches.
FindTuition – This is a great free scholarship service with over $24 million in scholarship funds to disburse.
FreeScholarshipGuide - They not only give you a good scholarship search function, but will send you a financial aid guide as well.
GoCollege – They have a good privacy policy and offer some great general advice to help you go to college.
ImmediateScholarships – They have scholarships ranging from $500 to $5000 and can give you some quick matches for your qualifications.
Military.com – If you are or were in the U.S. military you really should check this site out to see what scholarship information they have available.
Scholarships.com – This site has a huge scholarship database and seems to be a good resource to try.
StudentAidontheWeb – Another U.S. department of labor site, which we really like.
